Splash in the Boro Is Back, Statesboro — Let’s Make a Day of It

If you grew up around here, you already know what this weekend means. Splash in the Boro flips on the slides full-time on Saturday, and just like that, it’s officially summer in Statesboro. My kids have been counting down on the kitchen calendar for weeks, and I’d bet a fair number of yours have too.
For folks newer to Bulloch County: Splash in the Boro sits inside Mill Creek Regional Park out on Highway 24 East, and it’s the kind of place where you bump into half your patient list before you make it to the lazy river. After a low-key preview weekend earlier this month, the park opens seven days a week starting Saturday, May 23, according to the Statesboro Herald — perfectly timed for Memorial Day weekend.
What’s New at Splash This Year
The Recreation and Parks crew put in real work over the off-season, and it shows. Per the Statesboro Herald, this year’s refresh includes resurfaced and repainted water slides — the trio slide in particular got a full glow-up — along with luxury cabanas for families that want a little shade and a home base for the day. There’s also a new walking taco stand, which my middle child considers more important than the slides themselves. I’m not going to argue with her.
The bones of the park are still the same — the wave pool, the lazy river, the kiddie area, and the bigger slides for the brave. What’s different is the polish, and that’s a credit to Bulloch County Recreation and Parks.
Hours, Location, and How to Plan a Smooth Day
Per the published hours from the Statesboro Herald, here’s what to expect once seven-day operation kicks in:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday the park runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Saturday it stays open later, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday is noon to 6 p.m. Splash sits at 1388 Highway 24 East, about ten minutes from downtown Statesboro and a comfortable drive for our Brooklet, Lyons, and Toombs County neighbors.
A neighborly tip from somebody who has forgotten the sunscreen exactly one too many times: pack a small cooler, bring a refillable water bottle for every person in your group, and assign one adult to be the “where are the towels” person. You’ll thank me by 2 p.m.
Why a Water Park Day Is a Health Day in Disguise
Here’s something I tell folks at the pharmacy counter every May: a day at Splash is wonderful for your family — fresh air, movement, time off screens — but it’s also a day that quietly puts your skin, your hydration, and sometimes your medications to the test. A little planning goes a long way.
South Georgia sun in late May is no joke. Most people apply sunscreen once at the gate and call it good, but broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher needs to go back on every two hours, and after every long swim. Don’t forget ears, the back of the neck, the tops of the feet, and the part in your hair. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) tend to be the gentlest choice for little ones and for anyone with sensitive skin.
On the medication side: some common prescriptions and over-the-counter products make your skin more sun-sensitive than usual. That includes certain antibiotics like doxycycline, some blood pressure medicines, and even a few acne treatments. If you’re not sure whether something you take falls into that category, pop into any of our Walker Pharmacy locations and ask. We genuinely don’t mind — that’s what we’re here for.
And hydration matters more than you’d think. The combination of Georgia humidity and chlorinated water dehydrates you faster than a regular day outside. Plain water is great. If you’ve got someone in your group who tends to get headaches or cramps when they overheat, a low-sugar electrolyte option is a smart thing to have in the cooler.
Walker Pharmacy’s Place in This Community
Walker Pharmacy has been part of Statesboro and Bulloch County since 1984, and these days we serve neighbors from four locations across Statesboro, Brooklet, and Lyons. That long stretch means we’ve watched a lot of summers come and go at Mill Creek Park — first with my dad behind the counter, and now with me. The start of Splash season feels like a community holiday. It brings together longtime locals, Georgia Southern students staying for the summer, and families who just moved in this year.
If we can help you head into Memorial Day weekend ready — refilling a sun-sensitive prescription early, recommending a reef-safe sunscreen, or putting together a little pool bag of essentials — we’re glad to do it. Just stop by, or visit walkerpharmacy.com to find your closest location.
