Summer Reading at the Library: A Statesboro Family Tradition

A Boro Summer Tradition Worth Showing Up For

If you’ve driven past the Statesboro Regional Library on Lakeside Drive this past week, you’ve probably noticed the parking lot is busier than usual. That’s not a coincidence. The library’s Summer Reading Program 2026 is in full swing, and this year’s dinosaur theme has the whole place buzzing with kids, parents, and grandparents looking for something fun, free, and worth their time.

I’ll be honest with you — as a dad and a pharmacist, I love this time of year for a lot of reasons, but the library’s summer programming is right at the top of the list. We’ve been part of this town since my dad opened Walker Pharmacy in 1984, and one thing that has stayed steady through all those decades is how much our local library does for Bulloch County families. So this Friday, I want to talk about what’s happening at our library this weekend and why it matters more than you might think.

What’s Going on at the Library This Weekend

The Summer Reading Program officially kicked off on June 1, and according to the Statesboro Herald community calendar, registration is open to all ages with weekly prizes for reading. Families can sign up through Beanstack — and yes, even the grown-ups can register and rack up some reading time.

Here’s a quick look at what neighbors can drop in on right now:

  • Friday, June 12: Dinosaur Dungeons & Dragons Adventure at 1 p.m. (whole family) and Ukulele Lessons at 3 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 13: Cookie Excavation at 2 p.m. — yes, you read that right. The kids dig fossils out of cookies.
  • Monday, June 15: Senior Decoupage Napkins at 11 a.m. and Senior Story Share at 2 p.m. for our 55-and-older neighbors.
  • Tuesday, June 16: Baby Music Time at 10 a.m., a Summer Kids’ Club at the Statesboro Mall at 10:30 a.m. (clay dinosaurs), and Adult Dino Planters at 11 a.m.

All of these are free. All of them are open to the community. For more details on any of them, the library staff can be reached at (912) 764-1341, and the full schedule keeps rolling all the way through summer.

Why a Cookie Excavation Counts as Health Care

You might be wondering why a pharmacist is writing about library programming. Stick with me here.

One thing we talk about a lot at Walker Pharmacy — especially when school lets out — is the “summer slide.” Kids who go all summer without reading or learning can lose ground academically before fall arrives. But there’s a quieter version of that slide we don’t talk about as much: the wellness slide. Long, hot Georgia summer days can mean too much screen time, too little movement, and a kind of low-grade boredom that wears on a child’s mood.

An air-conditioned library full of dinosaur crafts, music, and storytime is a real, practical answer to all of that. It gets kids out of the house. It builds routine. It puts them in a room with other kids and trusted adults. And it costs nothing. As parents of three growing kids, my wife and I count that as one of the best deals in town.

For older neighbors, the library’s senior programming does something similar. Social connection, creative activity, and a regular reason to leave the house are all part of healthy aging — and they don’t require a prescription. The decoupage classes and story shares this Monday are quietly some of the best wellness opportunities in Bulloch County.

Walker Pharmacy and Our Library: Same Mission, Different Building

I don’t want to overstate this, but I do think pharmacies and libraries have more in common than people realize. Both are neighborhood places where you can walk in, ask a question, and walk out better off than when you came in. Both are run by people who actually know your name. Both are anchors for a community that’s growing fast — Statesboro, Brooklet, Lyons, and the wider Bulloch and Toombs County area — but still cares about looking after each other.

That’s the spirit behind walkerpharmacy.com and behind every conversation we have at the counter. We’re here because Statesboro raised us. Supporting families through summer — whether that’s a vacation prescription transfer, a sunscreen recommendation, or just cheering on the library’s dinosaur season — is part of the job we love doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the 2026 Summer Reading Program at Statesboro Regional Library end?

The program runs throughout the summer with weekly prize drawings. Specific end dates are announced by the library, so it’s worth calling (912) 764-1341 or checking with library staff for the closing date and final celebration.

Do I need to register to attend library events?

Most drop-in family events do not require pre-registration. The reading program itself does require a quick sign-up through Beanstack so the library can track reading minutes and award prizes. The library can walk you through it in person if Beanstack is new to you.

Is the Statesboro Regional Library Summer Reading Program only for kids?

No — that’s one of the best-kept secrets in town. Adults and seniors can register too, and there’s dedicated programming for ages 55 and older, teens, babies, and everyone in between. The summer slate genuinely covers every age in your household.

Is there a cost to attend?

All Summer Reading Program events at the Statesboro Regional Library are free and open to the community. That accessibility is one reason we’re so proud to have this library in our town.

Where exactly is the library located?

The Statesboro Regional Library is at 124 South Main Street in Statesboro. A few of the Summer Kids’ Club events meet at the Statesboro Mall instead — the calendar will tell you which is which. When in doubt, give the library a call at (912) 764-1341.

One Last Neighborly Nudge

If you’re a Walker Pharmacy patient (or thinking about becoming one), summer is a great time to make the switch. We can move your prescriptions over from another pharmacy in just a few minutes — most folks do it during a quick stop in. You can start that process at walkerpharmacy.com/transfer-prescriptions/, or just walk into any of our four locations in Statesboro, Brooklet, or Lyons and we’ll take it from there.

And while you’re out and about this weekend, swing by the library. Take a kid. Take a grandparent. Dig a fossil out of a cookie. That’s a summer Friday in the Boro at its best.
