Pitch In Saturday, Pedal Out Next Week: A Big Stretch for the Boro
Friends, this is one of those weeks I love most as a Statesboro neighbor. Saturday morning we get to put on work gloves and tidy up the place we all share, and a few days later the whole town turns its attention to two wheels and the trails that thread through Bulloch County. Two very different events, but they’re both about the same thing — taking pride in where we live and looking after each other while we’re at it.
Walker Pharmacy has been on these streets since 1984, and I still pass folks in our aisles whose families I’ve known my whole life. So when something good is happening for the community, I want to make sure our patients hear about it from a neighbor — not just a flyer.
The Greatest American Cleanup Comes to the Boro This Saturday
Tomorrow morning, May 9, Keep Statesboro-Bulloch Beautiful is hosting the local edition of the Greatest American Cleanup. Volunteers will gather at the City Hall porch at 50 East Main Street between 9 a.m. and noon, get their location assignments, and fan out to clear litter from public spaces around town. Supplies are provided. According to the Statesboro Herald, organizers will have some swag and prizes on hand for folks who pitch in.
This year’s effort is part of a national push tied to America’s 250th birthday next July, with a goal of pulling 25 billion pieces of litter from parks, waterways, and public areas before the country’s semiquincentennial — an ambitious number, but one we can chip away at three hours at a time on a sunny Saturday in May.
I’ll be there with my kids. A clean stretch of sidewalk isn’t somebody else’s job — it’s a small piece of citizenship that makes everything else easier. And honestly, after thirty minutes of walking, bending, and bagging, you’ve gotten more exercise than most weekday workouts.
Statesboro Bike Week Rolls In May 11–17
The week right after the cleanup, our city marks Statesboro Bike Week. Two events anchor the celebration. First up is Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15 — a chance to leave the truck at home and roll in to the office on two wheels. Then on Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m., there’s a Community Bike Ride starting at the Pretoria Station Trailhead — what most of us know as Five Points — near Burkhalter Road. Riders will head out along the S&S Greenway Trail and circle back. It’s a friendly, all-paces ride.
If you’ve never been on the Greenway, this is a great excuse. The trail has matured beautifully — shaded stretches, smooth pavement, and enough flat ground that you don’t need to be a serious cyclist to enjoy it.
Why This Stretch Matters for Your Health
I’m a pharmacist, so my brain is always running through the health angles. A litter cleanup and a bike ride don’t sound like medical events, but they’re some of the most accessible “treatments” available to most of us. A few hours outdoors moving your body lowers blood pressure, eases anxiety, and improves sleep. Sunlight on a May morning gives your body a vitamin D nudge. And doing something with neighbors — chatting, laughing, working alongside people you don’t see during the week — is one of the most underrated forms of preventive care there is.
A few practical reminders. May mornings can flip from cool to warm in an hour, so bring water, wear sunscreen (a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied if you’re out past lunch), and pop on a hat. If pollen has been your enemy this spring, take your usual antihistamine before the activity rather than after. And if you’re starting a new exercise routine after a long winter — I see you — ease in. A short ride is better than no ride.
Walker Pharmacy in the Mix
Across our four locations in Statesboro, Brooklet, and Lyons, we keep a steady stock of the supplies that make outdoor weekends easier — sunscreen, electrolyte powders, allergy medication, blister care, and the basics of a first-aid kit. If you’re swinging by, the team can point you to what you need in about ninety seconds. We’re not trying to upsell anybody. We just like seeing our neighbors prepared.
If you’ve been meaning to move your prescriptions to a local pharmacy that knows your name, you can start the transfer at walkerpharmacy.com/transfer-prescriptions/ in about three minutes from your phone, and we handle the rest.
